All about Paper Shredders

Paper shredder is a device the shreds confidential documents in different forms such as papers, CDs, DVDs, floppy discs, and envelops. This is an important device to every business organizations as there is an increasing rate of identity theft especially in America. US Federal Trade Commission estimates that there are 9 million cases of identity theft in America alone. This makes a great demand on paper shredders in mid 1980s until there was a shortage of shredder to supply government and non-government entities.

The paper shredder was invented by Abbot Augustus Low of Piercefield, New York. He calls the machine as “waste paper receptacle” and on 1909 the device received a US patent. Today, there are new innovations for paper shredders which help government bodies and private individuals obtain a high standard level of security.

There are different types of shredders that you can choose from. Two major types of shredders are personal shredders and commercial-grade shredders. Personal shredders are designed only for home use and for private individuals who are dealing with confidential transactions and documents. Commercial-grade shredders are used by government entities, businesses and other industrial organizations. Shredders are typically an electrical device but there are also types of shredders that are unpowered such as multi-cut scissors built with multiple blades. Paper shredding is an easy task using these multi bladed scissors and electrical machines.

Paper shredders have different types of cutting blades. When you want to buy a shredder, look for a unit with a cutting blade that provides maximum security. The two most widely-used cutting blades are strip-cut and cross cut shredders. Strip-cut shredders have rotating knives to cut sheets in ribbon-like pieces. Strips may vary according to how thin the knives can cut the sheets. Strip-cut is not recommended to use on top secret documents as it does not provide a high level of security. Cross-cut shredders however are one of the most recommended shredders for organizations with classified and top secret documents. They cut sheets in confetti-like pieces in different shapes such as rectangular, parallelogram, and diamond shapes. There are also shredders that offer a good level of security such as particle-cut, cardboard, disintegrators, hammermills, piece and tear, and grinders.

Document shredding using an electrically powered device can produce a loud noise, but with modern day innovations, paper shredders come with silent operation features. Added features includes safety sensors that detect living things that gets too close to the machine’s intake manifold; mess reduction that automatically cleans the cycle as shredded papers builds up in the container; and jam proof shredders to detect the thickness of an item, helping the device avoid paper jams.

Oftentimes, paper shredders can be very sensitive especially the personal type shredders with strip-cut blades. To avoid breakage, paper jams and damages, users must follow cautiously the manufacturer’s instructions on how to use the unit. Regular oiling is a must for commercial-grade shredders as they do a laborious task shredding volumes of confidential documents. Use a clean cloth or a towel to wipe soot and residues from the machine.
